Grammar Exam | Google Forms
Google Forms |Creation and Applicaton
To create this Grammar Exam for my Virtual Co-op, I used Google Forms. Google Forms is an easy-to-use, free survey creation website. You just need to have a Google account to use it! On Google Forms, you can create many different types of questions for your exam/questionnaire/survey. These types include multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown select menus, short answer, and paragraph. For the grammar exam, I picked multiple choice for the majority of the questions because they had one answer and checkboxes for the bonus questions because they could have more than one answer. I also made all of the exam questions, except for the bonus questions, required, which you can turn on by using a slider at the bottom of each question. One important note is that it Google Forms does not automatically number questions, you must do it yourself. In Forms you can customize the theme of the form by clicking on the paint palate at the top right hand corner of the screen. I chose a literary theme to relate to English by adding a Google header of a book shelf, which automatically changed the color scheme to a medium brown color. In addition, I changed the question text to "Formal" under font style in the Theme tab to make the font of the questions unique. Since this Form is a quiz, I turned on "Make this a quiz" in settings, changed the "Release grade: Immediately" in settings to manual review at the request of my Co-op, limited form responses to one, and learned how to put in point values and select correct answers for test questions.
This technology tool is a great aid for the different domains of the Danielson Framework for Teaching! The particular way that my Co-op and I used this form fits under Component 3D: Using Assessment in Instruction in Domain 3: Instruction. We created it to perform a summative assessment on students to determine how much they had learned about English grammar, identify any learning gaps, and then move forward to remediate these learning gaps and provide additional instruction. This tool can also be used in other domains such as Domain 1: Planning and Preparation, in Component 1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students, because teachers can use it at the beginning of the school year to discover information about students' interests, families, extra-curricular activates, and learning style. Teachers can contact families through Google Forms as well to ask parents/guardians about how much they would like to be involved in or informed about the classroom, technology use at home, or to ask if there are any particular needs of their students. This particular reason behind creating a Google Form falls under Danielson Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities, Component 4c: Communicating with families.
In my classroom, I plan to use Google Forms for student communication, assessment, planning, and connection with families. I want to use Google Forms at the beginning of the year to have students fill out an "All About Me" survey about their interests, family, and learning needs. I also plan to try using Forms to asses student knowledge by having students write an exit ticket or take a quick quiz through this platform. Another particularly helpful way to use Google Forms is sending out an interest survey to see if students plan to come to a school event or attend a field trip. I could even use forms to pick the best times for group tutoring. Finally, I desire to communicate with parents through Forms to ensure that their voices are heard in my classroom. I will use Forms to assess the desired level of parent involvement in the classroom, the level of family exposure to technological tools, and any intellectual/behavioral concerns that parents want me to know about their students.
